Illinois license plate laws you should know

Below are the four laws that most often trip up Illinois drivers. Rules are enforced at the stop, the inspection station, and at registration renewal.

Two plates required

625 ILCS 5/3-413 requires two plates on passenger vehicles — front and rear. Motorcycles and trailers display a rear plate only.

Front plate rule

No exemption for vehicles sold without a front bracket. Driving without a front plate is a petty offense carrying a fine.

Registration stickers & display

Month and year stickers are affixed to the rear plate only. Registration must be current — expired stickers are a citable offense.

Inspection / smog check

Illinois requires emissions testing in the greater Chicago and Metro East (St. Louis) areas for most 1996-and-newer gasoline vehicles. Testing is done via OBD-II every two years.

Types of Illinois license plates

Illinois issues dozens of plate designs. These are the main categories you'll encounter on the road or see at the DMV counter.

Standard passenger

Default Land of Lincoln design, two letters + five digits.

Personalized / vanity

Up to 7 characters on standard or specialty backgrounds.

Disability plates

Wheelchair symbol; qualifies for accessible parking statewide.

Disabled Veteran

Military & veteran

Purple Heart, Gold Star, POW, and branch-specific plates.

Specialty & cause plates

Universities, sports teams, environmental, and charitable cause plates.

File a police report if the plates were stolen.
  2. 2
Complete Form VSD 190 (Application for Vehicle Transaction).
  3. 3
Visit a Secretary of State facility with the form, valid ID, and the $29 replacement fee.
